Proximate Analysis of Roughage Samples Available in a Selected Hilly Area of Bangladesh

The present study was conducted at Animal Nutrition Laboratory, Department of Livestock Services, Farmgate, Dhaka. Ten roughage samples were collected form Chittagong hilly area (Khagrachari). After collection, those were dried in sunlight and packed in polythene bags. For botanical identification of roughages samples were transported to Animal Husbandry Laboratory, Khulna University. The chemical composition of the roughages, viz. the organic matter (OM), crude protein (CP), crude fibre (CF), ash and ether extract (EE) were analyzed using the standard procedure described by the AOAC (1990) in Animal Nutrition Laboratory, Department of Livestock Services, Farmgate, Dhaka. Data were analyzed using ‘SPSS’ computer program for mean, standard error and analysis of variance (ANOVA).  The results of the study revealed that the effects of seasons on proximate components were found more or less significant. The highest average values of OM, CP, ash, CF and EE were 95.23±0.34 (Ulu), 18.84±1.43 (Dumur leaves), 18.45±0.27 (Rice straw), 50.18±1.43 (Ulu) and 1.87±0.21 (Jackfruit leaves), respectively. Least Square analysis of variance showed that three different seasons influenced significantly on chemical composition of roughages. In case of rice straw most of the proximate components were not varied according to seasons except CF and EE.
